The law also includes punishments for other sex crimes including adultery and underage sex.
Human Rights Watch said: "The rights of Indonesian sexual and gender minorities have come under unprecedented attack in 2016".
Though Indonesia is a majority Muslim country, Aceh is the only region to practice sharia law, having adopted it two years ago after being given the right to govern itself back in 2005.

Two men in Indonesia's Aceh Province could face 100 lashes with a cane for having sex with each other. The chief inspector said the men had confessed to being gay and would be detained for sentencing.
Gay sex is not illegal in the rest of Indonesia, which mainly follows a criminal code inherited from former colonial ruler the Netherlands.
Marzuki said residents in Banda Aceh's Rukoh neighborhood were suspicious of the two men because they often seemed to be intimate.
A 60-year-old Christian woman also faced the wrath of local Sharia authorities last year after she was caught selling bottles of alcohol and was lashed almost 30 times as her neighbours watched.
Last year a 20-year-old woman was publicly caned for standing too close to her boyfriend.
In October 2016, the Guardian wrote of 13 people caned in a mosque at the capital, Banda Aceh, for breaking intimacy laws by hugging and kissing out of wedlock.
"Instead of slurring LGBT people like they did throughout 2016, government officials should make and uphold public pledges to protect all Indonesians from violence and discrimination", said Knight, adding the government is "appealing to populist intolerance".
This allowed greater autonomy regarding lawmaking including the introduction of Sharia law.
