The lights are being switched off around the world at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, to mark the 10th annual Earth Hour, and to draw attention to climate change.

Before the switch-off, an Earth Hour Camp took place which featured interactive climate adaptation and mitigation booths. The initiative is supported by 7,000 cities around the world.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) initiative started in Australia in 2007 as a gesture against man-made carbon dioxide emissions.

"When individuals unite, the power of the collective can create a massive impact as we have seen with Earth Hour observations over the past decade", he added.

The WWF said Earth Hour is not a one-hour commitment to conservation but rather a symbol of something bigger.

During this earth hour held under the motto "Shine a light on climate action", the participants enjoyed performance of well-known dance groups, entertainment master classes on zumba, incendiary music and other surprises.

During "Earth Hour" actions, facade lights of famous buildings are turned-off in the big cities at 20:30 in the local time for an hour and the attendants promote energy saving through this symbolic action.

Buckingham Palace, Blackpool Tower, Brighton Pier, the Senedd Building in Cardiff, the Kelpies sculpture in Falkirk and Edinburgh Castle are among those also taking part. The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Big Ben Clock Tower in London, the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro and the Empire State Building in NY are among the monuments whose operators have agreed to participate in the demonstration.

Earth Hour, launched nine years ago, is the world's largest movement aimed at bringing people together to protect the planet and highlight environmental issues. Find us on Facebook too!
