Authorities said Monday morning that at least 58 people had been killed and at least 500 had been injured, although those numbers are fluid.

"The Gospel of John reminds us that there is no greater love than to lay down one's life for a friend", she said during the White House press briefing. "There's now an open and ongoing law enforcement investigation, a motive is yet to be determined and it would be premature for us to discuss policy when we don't fully know all the facts or what took place last night".

She added: "But that's not the place that we are in at the moment".

"They have the strictest gun laws in the country".

In fact, the President did not mention gun control or terrorism in his brief remarks but did receive some praise for what critics called his uncharacteristic restraint.

Trump, however, has not always waited to inject politics into a mass shooting.

Ms Sanders also said that "laws.won't create or stop these type of [shootings] from happening" in a possible sign of what position the Trump administration will take on any future proposed legislation limiting use of firearms.

The NRA donated $USD30m ($A38.46) to Mr Trump's presidential campaign - and in April, the USA leader told members they had "a true friend in the White House". But several Democratic members of Congress have said this shooting highlights the need for more restrictions on buying weapons and machine guns.

Some politicians have already begun calling for increased gun control, including former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton who tweeted "Our grief isn't enough. Imagine the deaths if the shooter had a silencer, which the NRA wants to make easier to get", Clinton wrote.

"The only person with blood on their hands is the shooter, and this isn't the time for us to go after not any other individuals or organizations", she said.

"We haven't had the moment to have a deep dive on the policy part", Sanders said.

Sanders' comments come one day after a 64-year-old gunman opened fire onto a crowd at the Route 91 Harvest Festival from the 32nd floor of the nearby Mandalay Bay hotel and casino.

They are searching his residence in a retirement community in Mesquite, Nevada, approximately 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
