At least 50 people were killed and hundreds more were injured Sunday night when a gunman opened fire on more than 22,000 people gathered near the Mandalay Bay Casino for a country music festival.
James Cabrera and his wife Sonia Pena then jumped in their auto and drove to Las Vegas as fast they could from their home in La Habra, California. Aldean was on stage performing his song “When She Says Baby” when the shooter, Stephen Paddock, began opening fire from the 32ndfloor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino into the event.
Luke Broadlick was in the crowd.
“[The gunfire] sounded like a jackhammer”, he said. He moved his camera toward the direction of the noise. Earlier this morning, he posted to Instagram, asking for prayers. He wrote, “Insane … this JUST happened”.
Another Twitter user, Austin Olson, posted a video from the same moment.
“When we walked down towards the strip, there were girls sitting on the ground crying, there was security everywhere and there were people yelling”.
Another witness, Felipe Uribe, was watching the concert from the top floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel when he saw the attack take place.
Stephen Paddock, who had worked previously as an accountant, was “not an avid gun guy at all”, though he had a couple of handguns and a long gun, he said.
The brother also said that their father was bank robber Benjamin Hoskins Paddock who was on the FBI’s 10 most wanted list until 1977. They found him dead. (According to later reports, she was his longtime girlfriend.) By 6:37 a.m., police said they had located Danley out of the country and she was not considered a person of interest.
Kodiak Yazzie who was at the concert spoke with the Associated Press. Cecelia and I are beyond saddened by the tremendous loss of life. “You could see a flash, flash, flash, flash”. “And then we started seeing more glass coming down”. More bullets come again about 30 seconds later. He said he and his crew members were safe.
Another witness told a Las Vegas newspaper that the shots were “relentless“.
This is the deadliest shooting in modern USA history. The assailant killed eight people and was later shot dead by police.

Images and video from the Las Vegas Strip are harrowing. “Our community stands with Las Vegas during this hard time”, he wrote.
President Trump said via a tweet, “My warmest condolences and sympathiesto the victims and families of the awful Las Vegas shooting”. He described it as “an act of pure evil”. He said the nation is joined together today in sadness, shock and grief and called for flags to be flown at half-staff. “And it always has”, Trump said.
Update 8:00am CT, Oct. 2: In a press release on the shooting, Los Vegas police said 406 people were wounded in the shooting.
Politicians around the world offered their support for the United States and the people affected by the shooting.
