Trump’s statement may have been a needed jolt for Puerto Rico’s bond market, said Matt Fabian, a partner with Municipal Market Analytics. The bonds traded at 56.25 after the storm hit and have been falling ever since.
Hurricane Maria’s devastation of the island casts doubt that it will be able to afford the payments in the near term given government funds will likely be spent on the recovery.
“The president’s remarks do, however, strengthen Puerto Rico’s hand in negotiations with creditors”, the adviser said.
