The New Orleans Saints placed rookie linebacker Alex Anzalone, a Wyomissing grad, on injured reserve, according to Wednesday’s National Football League transactions report.

However, Anzalone was injured during the Saints’ win over the Miami Dolphins in London on Sunday, and the news isn’t good. The 6-foot-3, 240-pound linebacker had played sparingly since arriving, but became a member of a defense-focused Saints draft class in 2017. “Back at Florida, [he] had complications from surgery to fix a torn labrum, but it’s unclear if this shoulder injury is related”.

Being put on injured reserve does not necessarily mean that Anzalone will be out for the season, but he would have to miss several weeks. During what was his final season with the Gators in 2016, he saw his first extended run of playing time and capitalized by totaling 53 tackles and three sacks in eight games. He also contributed 28 snaps on special teams.

The Saints have filled four vacant roster spots over the past two days by re-signing defensive tackle John Hughes and fullback Zach Line and adding guard John Greco and linebacker Gabe Martin.
