A Tucson soldier was declared deceased Thursday following an August 25 helicopter crash off the coast of Yemen.
A statement issued by U.S. Central Command said five other service members who were aboard the craft were rescued. Yesterday, the DoD declared the missing solider dead.
Senator John McCain confirmed in a tweet Saurday that Rivera-Lopez was from Tucson.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
He is now presumed dead, according to the Military.com article.
Staff Sgt. Emil Rivera-Lopez was involved in a training incident off the coast of Yemen where a Blackhawk helicopter went down while practicing hoisting.
Several Tucson lawmakers expressed their condolences on social media Saturday. SSgt Rivera-Lopez was stationed in Savannah, GA, according to KVOA-affiliate WSAV. "My prayers are with his loved ones", U.S. Rep. Martha McSally wrote in a tweet.
Later in the day, Senator Jeff Flake also expressed his condolences for Rivera-Lopez. "You are in our prayers", U.S. Sen.
The Army Times reported the 31-year-old Rivera-Lopez hailed from San Juan, P.R., and had been awarded nine commendations since joining the Army in July 2006.
