Major League Baseball hopes to hold a special meeting before November to vote on approving the sale of the Marlins to the group headed by venture capitalist Bruce Sherman that includes Jeter, the former New York Yankees captain. Jeter asked Samson to issue the dismissals, which is even more freaky given that Jeter reportedly decided that Samson will also be let go.
Samson did, however, fire several big names from the front office and it was reportedly at the behest of Jeter.
The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson reported on Friday that Derek Jeter's prospective ownership group plans to fire multiple special assistants in the Marlins' front office.
On Friday, the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson and Clark Spencer reported Jeter "has informed the team that he plans to fire" McKeon, who serves as a special assistant to owner Jeffrey Loria, as well as Andre Dawson, Tony Perez and Jeff Conine, all of whom are special assistants to the president.
Dawson, Perez, McKeon and Conine were only in "special assistant" roles for the organization, which many former players hold for the franchises they were associated with.
Conine hit.333 with four runs scored to help lead the Marlins over Jeter's Yankees in the 2003 World Series, four games to two.
As I said, this is pretty odd.
"No question you're sad", McKeon told Jackson about his dismissal. A new regime is coming in and they want their new people in there.
The winningest manager in Marlins history at 281-257, McKeon managed the Marlins to their 2003 World Series championship after inheriting a losing team that May. "You can't fault them with that".
