Rescuers saved 68 passengers after a ferry sank in rough seas off Cape Town on Friday.

NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon confirmed that a rescue was now taking place.

Several craft from the NSRI stationed at Table Bay, Hout Bay, Bakoven and Melkbosstrand launched rescue craft.

Rescuers from the NSRI, The South African Airforce and police were dispatched.

City of Cape Town spokesperson Theo Layne said the passengers were removed from the vessel and ferried to the ferry jetty.

Passengers were transferred from the Thandi to another Robben Island ferry.

UPDATE: The NSRI has said that all passengers have now been accounted for, two have been taken to hospital.

Based on early, unconfirmed reports from the scene, IOL previously reported that 69 people were rescued.
