Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly added his name to a list of more than 350 tech and business leaders who sent a letter Friday asking President Trump not to end a program that allows undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S.as children to remain in the country.
DACA was created through a 2012 Homeland Security memo and heartily supported by then-President Barack Obama after lawmakers failed to push comprehensive immigration reform through Congress. Hundreds of thousands of recipients will return to a fully undocumented status and be subject to deportation when their current DACA status approvals expire in the coming two years. Currently, there are approximately 800,000 DACA recipients in the country. Information on aid to cover the $495 application fee will also be available at this weekend’s event.
DACA recipients had no options for pursuing lawful immigration status before DACA existed. “They’re anxious about their family, because majority, their family members, remain undocumented, and now that they lose their status, they lose their main source of income or, for some cases, some of their families, because they don’t know financially what they’re going to do”. Many students and immigrants can not raise the $495, which they need to renew their status on short notice.
Democrats and Republicans may disagree on the constitutionality of DACA and the way it was implemented. They note that at least three-quarters of the top 25 Fortune 500 companies have DACA recipients as employees. Now more than ever, our Indiana Congressional delegation must act to protect DACA recipients who have gone to school here, paid taxes, stayed out of trouble and have known no other home but Indiana.
