The United States Senate officially confirmed team owner Woody Johnson as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom, meaning he will cede control of the team. He will relinquish his day-to-day duties with the team.
The votes came as the Senate cleared the deck of dozens of nominees as it recessed for August.
The Jets have gone 132-140 since Johnson bought the team in 2000.
The 70-year-old heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune raised money for his fellow billionaire's presidential campaign and donated 1 million dollars (£760,000) to his inaugural committee.
Johnson, the chairman and CEO of the Johnson Co. private asset management firm in NY, is a longtime Republican donor and contributed $1 million to President Trump's inaugural committee. The farthest they've advanced with Johnson as owner was a loss in the AFC title game to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2010.
Woody Johnson becomes at the least the second National Football League owner to serve as a US ambassador, as late Steelers owner Dan Rooney was the ambassador to Ireland under President Barack Obama.
