White House officials are considering others for the position in addition to Perry, the sources said. "He's honored to be mentioned, but he loves what's he's doing", said Robert Haus, director of public affairs at the department. Since then, the two have traveled to a Boy Scout jamboree in West Virginia together, and Perry has been named one of Trump's national security advisers.

Recently appointed to the position of Energy Secretary previous year, Rick Pay may now be in the running to head the Department of Homeland Security.

Kelly is a retired Marine Corps general who was a strong supporter of Trump's U.S. -Mexico border wall plan and made swift moves to fortify immigration enforcement efforts in his short tenure. Texas has a large Latino population, and Perry helped advance legislation that let undocumented children of immigrants pay in-state tuition for college.

Some of Trump's administration favor Rep. Michael McCaul, a Texas Republican, for the job.
