We think it's fair to say that OnePlus has a rocky reputation when it comes to software support of their older devices.
So, will they? OnePlus has said "yes" before, but this time, it has confirmed that it will be that last Android version upgrade for the pair.
In a recent interview that was published on the OnePlus forums, the head of product at OnePlus revealed that Android O would be the last major update that the OnePlus 3 and 3T would see. After the 3 and 3T get the O update, the Open Beta Program will be "moving" to the OnePlus 5. However, the company remains committed to providing security updates for the foreseeable future. It's worth noting that OnePlus has been pushing continuous updates through the beta program to test the new features before pushing a public release.
OnePlus does specifically mention that security updates will continue for the "foreseeable future" (whatever that means), but still, buyers of this phone probably would have liked to have a solid two years of Android version updates. On the other hand, the OnePlus 3T has only been out for nine months, with the OnePlus 3/3T presumably packing more than sufficient hardware to support at least one more major software update beyond Android O.
Therefore, it's safe to assume that the new firmware will hit the OnePlus 3 and 3T before the year end.
According to Oliver, the August security patches for the OnePlus 3 and 3T are going to be released "soon" while the OxygenOS 4.5 build will be out "in the next 1-2 months". Otherwise, you'll have to wait a while for each official update to come in as the OnePlus 5 has gotten development priority.
