Alex Smith led the Chiefs to a quick touchdown and first-round pick Patrick Mahomes II had an impressive debut, before the San Francisco backups led the 49ers to a 27-17 victory over Kansas City in their preseason opener Friday night. "But in my mind, they're both starters".
Tyler McCloskey provided the go-ahead points on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Beathard, who earlier connected with Bourne on a 48-yard touchdown pass and an ensuing two-point conversion pass to tie the score at 17.
Barkley was first off the bench and led San Francisco to a pair of field goals, playing roughly two quarters.
In his National Football League head-coaching debut, Kyle Shanahan watched as Alex Smith and the Chiefs marched 75 yards for a touchdown on their opening drive, largely at the expense of Rashard Robinson, whom the 49ers are counting on to be their top cornerback this season. He paced with his play sheet while relaying in offensive calls. "... I'm glad how the guys battled".
First, he was beaten badly down the right sideline by wide receiver Tyreek Hill on the game's first play for the 32-yard gain.
-Defensive end Aaron Lynch, working with the second team, recorded two sacks in the first half. His pressure against the right guard almost resulted in a sack and instead it produced an interception by Rashard Robinson.
Offensively, however, this wasn't an encouraging first impression by the 49ers starters against the host Chiefs: two series, seven snaps, three yards. Still, some of the passes he's thrown give me hope that he'll get everything together soon. He worked over Chiefs right tackle Jah Reid, a seven-year National Football League veteran.
- Defensive lineman Ronald Blair sustained a fourth-quarter groin injury. In the second quarter, the 49ers had an eight-yard touchdown pass from Matt Barkley to Aldrick Robinson wiped out by penalty. If you don't have cable, the easiest way to watch the Chiefs vs 49ers live stream in either city is with an antenna.
-Jimmie Ward remains on the physically-unable-to-perform list with a hamstring injury.
- The 49ers captains were Bowman (defense), Joe Staley (offense) and, in a positive sign for his roster chances, Burbridge (special teams). Safety Jaquiski Tartt (ribs), running back Tim Hightower (knee), tight end George Kittle (hamstring) and linebacker Brock Coyle (ribs) did not play.
