The slain DSP's vehicle was sacked upon from the front side.
According to police sources, unidentified armed pillion riders sprayed bullets on the vehicle of DSP Muhammad Haneef near Hussainabad area of Azizabad, leaving him and his driver, Sultan, critically injured.
In the latest attack on traffic police, a senior officer of the traffic police and his driver were shot dead Friday morning by unidentified assailants in Azizabad neighbourhood of the city, ARY News reported.
As a result, DSP Mohammad Hanif and his driver/gunman Sultan died on the spot.
The DIG further said that around 18 shells of bullets of 9mm pistol have been recovered from the scene.
Zulfiqar Larik, deputy inspector general of police, said it was unclear who was behind the shooting but suspicion fell on local militants who often claim responsibility for attacks on security forces in Karachi and elsewhere in the country.
Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal has taken notice of the killing of DSP traffic and directed additional Inspector General Police to submit report in this regard.
On July 24, a traffic police official was martyred and another injured in a similar attack in the Abul Hasan Isphani road area of the metropolis.
The traffic officials were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed hospital; however, they succumbed to injuries.
This is not the first attack of its kind in the metropolis.
On July, gunmen killed three policemen and a 12-year old boy in the Korangi area.
