President Donald Trump on a phone call.
"That is a good idea".
"Here I am calling for a ban where I am not letting anybody in and we take 2,000 people". It stipulates that Australia "would transfer up to 1,250 refugees now held in offshore detention centers on the Pacific Island nation of Nauru and Papua New Guinea's Manus Island to the United States", with many of these refugees coming from Iran, according to CNN. Turnbull tries to stress the importance of honouring the deal, but Trump becomes increasingly mad. I am the world's greatest person that does not want to let people into the country.' 'It is important to you and it is embarrassing to me.
"People may get a discount for one or two years but remain on a contract for five or six years but they don't know when the discount ends".
Trump calls the deal "horrible" and "disgusting", but that he has no choice but to honour it.
"Since families are feeling price pressures now, it is important to ensure no family pays a cent more for electricity than it needs to", Prime Minister Turnbull said.
Mr Trump's admiration seems to turn to frustration later in the call when he complains about the deal, and says his call with Russian president Vladimir Putin was better. That is why they lost the election, because of stupid deals like this. This deal will make me look awful. They said I had no way to 270 and I got 306. I will be seen as a weak and ineffective leader in my first week by these people.
TURNBULL: You can certainly say that it was not a deal that you would have done, but you are going to stick with it.
Vice President Mike Pence was dispatched to Australia in April to smooth over relations between the two countries, which were strained by the refugee spat and Australia's disappointment with Trump's decision to pull out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact. "I get it", Trump says, not getting it at all.
Mr Trump said the deal "is going to kill me" and "makes me look so bad". "I guarantee you they are bad. That is why they are in prison right now", he said. "It is because in order to stop people smugglers, we had to deprive them of the product", before adding an example where "even if you are a Noble [sic] Prize-winning genius, we will not let you in". I have had it. "I have been making these calls all day, and this is the most unpleasant call all day". So we would rather take a not-very-attractive guy that helps you out then to take a Noble Peace Prize victor that comes by boat.
He pledged to "be there again and again" for the US. John McCain called Turnbull later to reiterate the United States' commitment to the alliance with Australia - but the White House staff-produced transcripts the newspaper obtained show how the conversation unfolded.
