Even more chilling, there was no ransom demand, say sources, leaving the motive in question and raising the specter that video footage, internal documents or even email correspondence could be leaked.
HBO is still trying to figure out the extent of the cyberattack on its computer systems – but so far there is no evidence that employees’ emails were stolen, the company’s top executive told staff. The greatest leak of cyber space era is happening. As a teaser, they provided a link to a script for an August 6 episode of Game of Thrones and promised much more. Back then, only the unreleased episodes of TV shows Room 104 and Ballers were released. The hack, which is believed to have involved a staggering 1.5 terabytes of data, seven times the size of the Sony hack, targeted specific content and data housed in different locations.
“A traditional business-grade DSL link would take about two weeks at full blast to exfiltrate that much data”, Farsight Security CEO Paul Vixie said via THR.
The hack also may have implications for the pending sale of HBO parent Time Warner to AT&T, which was agreed to in October at the price of $85 billion. “We immediately began investigating the incident and are working with law enforcement and outside cybersecurity firms”, the network said in the statement.
“I do not have details of what vulnerability the hackers managed to exploit in HBO’s case, but considering that the biggest cause of recent data breaches were web application hacks, and more specifically SQL Injection vulnerabilities, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a web application hack”, he said. The website also claims “in a complicate operation, we successfully penetrated in to the HBO Internal Network, Emails, technical platforms, and database and got precious and confidential stuff that blaze your eyes”.
“As most of you have probably heard by now, there has been a cyber incident directed at the company which has resulted in some stolen proprietary information, including some of our programming”, he said.
While Game of Thrones has been reaching record numbers of people, HBO has been struggling to contain leaks after suffering a major cyber attack over the weekend. Plepler warned employees that speculation in the media about the hack “may very well not be true”.
