Fires that flared dangerously close to homes in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles and in the city of Burbank were knocked down. The fire was ignited by someone using a weed-burning torch.
An illegally operated drone flew into the fire area Wednesday, forcing all firefighting aircraft to be grounded for safety reasons. Drones are banned around wildfires. Law enforcement responded and is investigating the incident.
The blaze spread up to 18-thousand acres.
On California's Central Coast, evacuation orders remain in place for sparsely populated rural areas of San Luis Obispo County east of the town of Santa Margarita due to a almost 2-square-mile (5 sq. kilometer) fire. It's also in steep, rugged terrain that makes it hard for firefighters to reach. The fire has so far charred about 28 square miles (73 square kilometers), all the while being fanned by winds whipping up to 35 mph (56 kph).
The local sheriff said he thought all hope was lost as the massive fire approached the larger town of Dewey-Humboldt. Officials are not immediately sure how many are homes.
