The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Saturday that Mark Redwine has been arrested and charged in the murder of his son, Dylan.

Officials say Dylan made contact with friends and his mother via text after arriving at his father’s house on Sunday, November 18, 2012, and made plans to meet with friends the next morning in nearby Bayfield. His remains were found in June 2013. It would take two years and five months – on November 1, 2015 – for hikers to find Dylan’s skull, about one-and-a-half mile away from where investigators originally found his first remains.

According to the indictment, the argument stemmed from “compromising photos” of Redwine that Dylan had seen.

The skull had injuries consistent with blunt force trauma and two small markings that appeared to be tool marks from a knife, the indictment alleges.

The indictment states that Betsy Horvath, Mark Redwine’s ex-wife, had voiced concerned that Mark may have hurt his own son.

During another search, on August 5, 2013, a K9 was introduced into the suspect’s home to find more clues into the boy’s death. Dylan was visitng his father over Thanksgiving break when he went missing. Dylan, who was living in Colorado Springs with his mother, Elaine Hall, flew to Durango-La Plata County Airport on Sunday, November 18, where Mark Redwine met him.

This arrest comes after a grand jury in Durango issued an indictment for probable cause against Redwine, in connection to his son’s death.

Mark Redwine was taken into custody in Bellingham, Wash. His first hearing will be at the La Plata County courthouse.
