President Donald Trump appeared to flirt with a female reporter during a call with the Irish Prime Minster Leo Varadkar Tuesday.

"Congratulations on your great victory", Trump told Varadkar, as the United States leader sat at the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office for the telephone talks.

Trump congratulated Varadkar on his "great victory" and said he feels like he knows all the Irish people in America.

However, the Herald understands there was no mention of the invitation issued by Mr Varadkar's predecessor Enda Kenny to Mr Trump to visit Ireland.

Before speaking with the Taoiseach, Mr Trump will also have a call with new French President Emmanuel Macron.

Donald Trump and Irish premier Leo Varadkar say they are both looking forward to meeting in person next March in Washington.

"I don't think my election as Taoiseach actually made history, it just reflected it, reflected the enormous changes that had already occurred in our country".

The president asked for an update on the Northern Ireland peace process and the situation regarding border controls between the Republic and the North.

The call took place at 11.15 a.m.in Washington, 4.15 p.m.in Dublin.

The 38-year-old Varadkar is Ireland's youngest prime minister.

After Mr Kenny extended the initial invitation, Mr Varadkar said he was not sure "what objective it would serve".

"I will not, of course, rescind that invitation", he said, adding that to do so would be "inappropriate" and would create a "diplomatic incident".

"You wouldn't necessarily assume that's the kind of visit it would be", he said.
