A small plane crashed on the 405 Freeway near John Wayne Airport on Friday morning, forcing closure of the freeway in both directions, according to KTLA. Two people were on the plane, which caught fire and produced a tower of smoke that could be seen for miles around.
A woman who had been on the plane pulled a man from the wreckage and said he was her husband, according to a witness who spoke to KABC.
A plane has reportedly crashed on the southbound 405 Freeway at MacArthur Boulevard in Irvine. Debris was all over the freeway. "It was insane. It was really scary".
Romo said the plane tilted to its side and nearly turned upside-down as it crashed into the freeway median.
Witnesses told KABC they saw several people who needed medical attention.
The airport said it was "currently closed to arrivals but departing flights are not affected". The northbound side was reopened around 10 a.m., the airport confirmed on Twitter.
