Prime Minister Narendra Modi today termed the Sabarmati Ashram here as Mahatma Gandhi's "tapobhoomi", or the land where he did spiritual practice, and said the place has enlightened the entire humanity.
Soon after the inauguration, PM Modi addressed a gathering present there and said, "Those familiar with the area in which this stadium is will tell you how different it looked a decade ago & how it changed for the better".
After a short visit to the Ashram, Modi left a message in the visitors" diary at "Hriday Kunj', a place inside the premises where the Father of the Nation used to live.
He released a commemorative first-day cover and a stamp of Rs 5 and coins of Rs 150 and Rs 10 denominations to mark the 150th birth anniversary of the Jain poet-thinker, which has coincided with the Sabarmati Ashram's centenary celebrations. "This is the place where Bapu worked tirelessly to achieve Independence and sow seeds of self-realisation and self-awakening. I salute this holy place, I salute Bapu".
Meira Kumar, the opposition's presidential candidate, will launch her campaign from the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad on Friday in the presence of Gujarat Congress leaders.
After t he ashram visit, Modi travelled to Rajkot where he spoke up for specially-abled people.
