US President Donald Trump has suggested he was just trying to keep fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey honest with his cryptic tweet implying there might be recordings of their private conversations.

After Trump fired FBI Director James Comey last month, he tweeted that the fired director "better hope there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" "I mean you'll have to take a look at that because then he has to tell what actually happened at the events". And if you look further back, before he heard about that, I think maybe he wasn't admitting that, so, you'll have to do a little investigative reporting to determine that. He then added that "there has been leaking by Comey".

Asked if the president had been trying to intimidate Mr Comey, Mr Spicer said: "No, quite the opposite". Trump and Comey spoke several times, both in person and on the phone.

However, Schiff said Thursday that Trump's tweet alone would not be enough, and that he had more questions, including whether the President was trying to threaten Comey with his May 17 tweet. "I can tell you that he did admit that what I said was right", Trump said, referring to Comey's initial refusal during his tenure to say the president himself wasn't under investigation in the FBI's probe. Trump has seized on that statement as vindication, though the investigation continues, as do congressional inquiries.

Mr Comey also said that Mr Trump asked him for "loyalty" - which Mr Trump emphatically denies.

US President Donald Trump has talked privately about the possibility of firing special counsel Robert Mueller, something the president would have to do by ordering his Justice Department to remove him.

However, Trump went on to claim that Mueller and Comey were "very, very good friends", and described the alleged relationship as "very bothersome". His instinct is: "'I'll out-bluff you'".

He later said that Trump had "no intention" of firing Mr Mueller, though he retained the authority to do so. "I don't know how this serves the country's interests".

Trump flirted with presidential runs in 1988 and 2000 before abandoning them. "People have worked on health care for many years". In March, he tweeted the incendiary claim that he was wiretapped by his predecessor, a charge he's never supported.

At a Senate committee hearing this month, Comey suggested that the president's reference to possible recordings inspired him to disclose to the media through an intermediary a memo he had written of their Oval Office conversation.

US President Donald Trump has laid out his belief that special counsel Robert Mueller is biased in the expanding Russian Federation investigation and suggested that he may eventually need to step down. "There might be a tape", Comey said.
