Iran's policy is to strengthen ties with Qatar, Rouhani says

"Congress has a particular power here, which is very important", Aljazeera's James Bays, reporting from Washington, DC, said, adding that in his letter Corker was "careful" not to single out a specific country.

"Helping Qatar economically and developing ties, particularly in the private sectors of both countries, could be a common goal", Rohani said.

The Republican head of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has said he will block arms sales to the Gulf states until the on-going diplomatic crisis with Qatar is resolved.

The comments on Tuesday by Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Qatar's foreign minister, came after a meeting with his U.S. counterpart, Rex Tillerson, in Washington, DC.

Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel said on Monday that the 13 point list of demands issued by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt included some which challenged Qatar's independence.

A Turkish foreign ministry statement Sunday reiterated that the deployment of Turkish troops in Qatar contributed to regional security and was not aimed at a specific country. Tillerson also said a "lowering of rhetoric would also help ease the tension".

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut air, sea and land links with Qatar three weeks ago.

Qatar said Saturday that a 13-point list of demands made by Saudi Arabia and its allies impinged on its sovereignty and failed to meet U.S. expectations they be "reasonable". Among other items, the four countries demanded that Qatar shut down the Al-Jazeera television network, long a source of conflict between Qatar and its neighbors.

"We approve and appreciate the attitude of Qatar against the list of 13 demands ..."

Iran will stand beside the Qatari government and people, Rouhani said in a phone conversation with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Sunday.

"Re-evaluating the base agreement with Qatar is not on our agenda, " he said. That presumably would mean Qatar would have to close down Al-Jazeera's English-language affiliate.

This photo taken on 5 June 2017 shows a man walking past the Qatar Airways branch in the Saudi capital Riyadh, after it had suspended all flights to Saudi Arabia following a severing of relations between major gulf states and gas-rich Qatar.

President Donald Trump initially expressed his support for the actions taken against Qatar despite it hosting the largest USA military base in the Middle East. Erdogan demanded. "No offence, but Turkey is not such an ordinary country".
