Investigators have also been looking for any evidence of possible financial crimes by Trump associates, the daily said, quoting unnamed USA officials.
On Wednesday, Trump's lawyer Marc Kasowitz suggested without providing evidence that the Federal Bureau of Investigation had leaked details of the criminal probe.
Comey admitted to leaking one of the memos to the media via a friend at Columbia Law School in order to trigger a social counsel to lead the Department of Justice's Russian Federation probe.
But in his testimony to the US Senate select committee on intelligence on Thursday, Comey accused Donald Trump of lying on several occasions, adding that he didn't feel safe being in the same room as him alone. The essence of Comey's testimony was that the president asked him to drop an investigation of retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn - Trump's former national security adviser - and then asked him to do so in return for keeping his job as FBI director and then fired him for not obeying his order. "Witch Hunt", the president wrote.
Late on Thursday, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein who is overseeing the Russian Federation investigation issued a statement saying the Justice Department does not confirm or deny the kind of allegations in news reports about the probe, and encouraging the public to be skeptical of them.
A source on Trump's legal team attempted to clarify the missive, claiming he was reacting to media reports about the investigation rather than offering public confirmation.
The Washington Post, citing unidentified officials, reported on Wednesday that special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating the Republican president for possible obstruction of justice. A spokesman for the DNI also declined to comment to CNN.
A close Trump associate said this week the president was considering firing Mueller, although the White House later denied it.
The Twitter attacks came as Vice-President Mike Pence hired a personal lawyer to represent him in the intensifying investigation. "However, nothing has changed", said Ian Prior, a Justice Department spokesman.
Trump did not directly address the allegations that he is being probed for possibly obstructing justice a potentially impeachable offense.
"Even his staunchest supporters will balk at such a blatant effort to subvert the law", Feinstein said. Pence headed the Trump transition until Inauguration Day.
For months now it's been his mission for it to be stated publicly that he is not personally under investigation.
"The Fake News Media hates when I use what has turned out to be my very powerful Social Media - over 100 million people! I can go around them".
It is the most significant sign yet that Mueller's investigation is extending beyond questions of Russian interference in the 2016 election.
