Mr Kushner has been a focus of the FBI investigation into whether there was any collusion between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin since earlier this year.
Kushner failed to disclose the meetings on his security clearance forms.
Upon Trump's return from a nine-day overseas trip, the administration will add experienced political professionals and possibly lawyers to handle the Russian Federation probe, which has gained new urgency since the Justice Department appointed a special counsel to head the investigation, the sources told Reuters.
The FBI and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Although no evidence has been found so far, the president and his staff have struggled to explain a string of meetings with Russian officials.
The meeting with the Russian ambassador, Sergey Kislyak, is significant because of how many members of Trump's campaign team he met over the course of Trump's meteoric rise within the GOP. The Post says Kislyak was reportedly "taken aback" by the suggestion. Still, the veracity of the Kushner claims seem odd to the officials who spoke to the Washington Post.
UPDATE -- 9:08 pm ET: Reuters is reporting that Kushner had "three previously undisclosed contacts" with the ambassador.
The investigations into the meddling and potential collusion have accelerated in recent weeks after the firing of FBI Director James Comey, who confirmed the FBI investigation in March and reportedly resisted pressure from Trump to end it's look at Flynn. Kislyak also attended a Trump campaign speech in Washington in April 2016 that Kushner attended.
He explained that the Federal Bureau of Investigation would easily learn of a Trump transition official regularly visiting the Russian embassy in Washington, causing "a great deal" of concern to intelligence officials. -Russian economic relations, six of the sources said.
The Post reported in April that Erik Prince, the former founder of Blackwater private security firm and an informal adviser to the Trump transition team, met on January 11 - nine days before Trump's inauguration - in the Seychelles islands in the Indian Ocean with a representative of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The statement from attorney Jamie Gorelick was issued amid reports the FBI was investigating meetings Mr Kushner had in December with Russian officials. The idea was broached during a meeting between Kushner and Kislyak during an early December meeting at Trump Tower, the paper said.
But on Friday, his top economic advisor Gary Cohn said Washington would not ease sanctions on Russian Federation over the conflict in Ukraine any time soon - and may even get tougher. "In other news, water is wet".
