Kell Brook (left) and Errol Spence after their IBF Welterweight World Championship at Bramall Lane, Sheffield.
He was on the defensive in the next as Spence enjoyed his best round with more body blows although Brook did nail his foe with another crisp right hand.
What is for sure is Brook is unlikely to fight again this year due to the need to undergo an operation in order to fix his left eye socket, which was first damaged by Spence Jr in the seventh round and only worsened from there, leading to the champion dropping to his knee in the 11th and being waved off by referee Howard Foster shortly after.
While Brook's career is in the balance, Spence (22-0, 19 KOs) is talking about world title unification fights against rival welterweight champions Keith Thurman and Manny Pacquiao.
"He hit me with some good shots, but it was nothing that ever hurt me", Spence remarked. "I had that in my mind", he said. "I was overshooting my left".
BBC Radio 5 live's boxing correspondent Mike Costello It never ceases to amaze me how much these men are willing to give. I said I was going to use that [hostility] as motivation, and that's what I did. He finds you from tricky angles and he can fight.
Brook was down in the 10th after Spence Jr continued the assault but the Briton, roused by a boisterous home support, came roaring back and responded in kind.
"I'm sure he's going to go into another fight that is going to be a nice, tune-up fight".
"I proved that I have a chin and I have true grit", said the American, who graded his own performance as a "B minus". I thought it was very competitive.
"I didn't feel that sharp, but true champions still win".
Brook went on his knees in the penultimate round, with his left eye causing him a lot of distress, before the referee callrd a hakt to the match. "It kept going to double vision and that's why I went down on one knee", Brook said on Sky Sports News HQ. I didn't want to fight just another ranked guy for a vacant belt.
"He was hurt. He was exhausted". He has gone to America and fought so I came here. "But there was a moment I realized I had to step up my game and I did". The 27-year-old Texan arrived on these shores with an undefeated record after 21 fights and Sugar Ray Leonard describing him as "the real deal". I want all the champions.
"I want to fight Keith Thurman, Manny Pacquiao.I want to fight the champions and unify the weight class", stated the newly crowned IBF champion.

Brook's promoter Eddie Hearn later revealed the 31-year-old had suffered the same type of injury to the opposite eye that he had sustained against Golovkin. "I need surgery again, and I'm devastated". He got some rounds. I've got to say I think that will be the end of his career. I got caught in the seventh in the eye and it felt the same as against Golovkin.
"I couldn't see out of the eye, so I had to stop". You can't fight if you can't see. However, there was endless speculation about a fight with Amir Khan, an unpopular witness on Saturday night.
They [the hospital] kept me in until about 3am.
Spence landed 44 percent of his power shots (comparable to the almost 43 percent he landed in his four previous CompuBox-tracked fights) and 71 of his 246 total connects were to the body.
