Underground cable catches fire in Center City

– Philadelphia police are investigating following an electrical fire broke out in Center City Wednesday morning.

The fire burned very close to Jefferson and Wills Eye Hospitals after an underground transformer caught fire around 8:15 a.m. After more than an hour, smoke continued to pour into the air.

Earlier road closures included the 800 blocks of Walnut and Locust Streets and sections of 8th and 9th Streets. Videos on social media showed thick smoke billowing into the air.

Peco reports there are 73 customers, possibly including high-rise buildings, without power in the area.

Crews are working to isolate the problem and restore power, Peco says.

It took sometime for crews to de-energize the sparking wire so that would could be done to fix it, PECO said.
