The YouTube app for Android is starting to support HDR videos on select devices. There is surprisingly little content available in HDR though, but it's around if you look.
Where can I find HDR videos on YouTube?
HDR has been hailed by some as the next big thing in home entertainment, promising a wider range of colors and thus more detailed and vibrant images. For example, HDR content from Netflix is only supported on the LG V30, Galaxy Note 8, Xperia XZ Premium and the Xperia XZ1. This YouTube HDR will be accessed through YouTube's own application. More partners will be announced in the future, according to the company.
If you have one of these phones, you don't have to do anything special to watch HDR videos - just fire up the YouTube app and, assuming it is the latest version and you're on an HDR video, you can choose to watch an HDR version by tapping the triple-dot menu button, then the resolution setting.
This new HDT support will offer 1080 pixel of screen resolution and 60 fps. Users can change the video quality as per the current Internet speed.
The update appears to have been quietly rolled out by Google without much hullaballoo. Netflix is slowly adding more smartphones that can view HDR content, but even their library is limited right now. And again, it's not like you can watch every Netflix video in HDR since only some of the content in their library now supports it. YouTube will provide their YouTube HDR support to such creators as well.
HDR video is an interesting new type of media that has slowly started to creep its way into the smartphone industry. Do you have anything to share?
