A half-dozen major ports, including facilities in Tampa, Miami and Savannah, suspended operations over the weekend. By Tuesday evening, the port authority proudly announced that three tankers had entered and were preparing to unload, and added that seven more are expected within 48 hours.
Officials were still assessing damage on Monday but reported few issues, aside from minor flooding in some areas. This follows the all-clear, with daylight restrictions, for Port Everglades and Port Canaveral on Tuesday.
Carnival said that due to berth limitations in PortMiami, the Carnival Sensation will now dock in Port Everglades on September 13 in the morning instead of Miami to conduct the debarkation process.
Hurricane straps installed on empty containers and ship-to-shore cranes prevented any damage to cargo, cranes or other infrastructure.
"We plan to hit the ground running tomorrow morning", Georgia Ports Executive Director Griff Lynch said Monday.
Ten petroleum companies have reopened at Port Everglades and are working around-the-clock to meet the unusually high consumer demand for fuel following Hurricane Irma, Port Everglades spokeswoman Ellen Kennedy said Wednesday in a news release.
The Port is prepared for the possibility of additional cruise ships, she said.
The Port of Palm Beach said on its website Tuesday morning that land-side cargo operations resumed at 6:00 a.m. and administrative offices re-opened at 8:30 a.m. Amid reports of fuel shortages across the state, diesel prices in Florida have gone up 7 cents a gallon over the past week, according to AAA.
This waiver ensures that all options are available to distribute fuel to Florida.
