The team struck at the last possible second Thursday night, reportedly acquiring Justin Verlander from the Detroit Tigers.
The Angels will be sending prospect Grayson Long and a player to be named later along with cash to cover part of this year's salary.
The Tigers have already traded Justin Upton to the Angels on Thursday and reports say they aren't done.
He's been on a tear this season for Detroit, with a 138 wRC+, a.264 ISO and 28 home runs in 125 games. He's a four-time All-Star in 11 seasons with Arizona, Atlanta, San Diego and Detroit.
Rosenthal reports that Upton told the Tigers that he would opt out of his contract for 2018 since the Tigers are in rebuild mode for the future.
For the Angels, the ability to add Upton now ensures that he'll be eligible for the team's postseason roster should the Halos qualify for the playoffs.
Maybin, 30, has hit.235 with six homers and 22 RBIs in 93 games this season.
According to McCosky, the Tigers would have gotten pitching prospect Franklin Perez, center fielder prospect Daz Cameron and possibly catcher prospect Jake Rodgers in return for Verlander.
The right-handed Long, a former third-round pick, went 8-6 with a 2.52 ERA in 23 starts with the Angels' Double-A Mobile farm club this season.
