As Katia was making landfall, Hurricane Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic storms in a century, walloped Cuba's northern coast as a Category 5 storm.
It lost some strength before it landed about 185 km northwest of the port city of Veracruz as a Category 1 storm with sustained winds 120 km/h.
However, Jose is coming behind Hurricane Irma, a unsafe Category 5 hurricane that the National Hurricane Center is calling "potentially catastrophic". Maximum sustained winds are near 40 miles per hour with higher gusts. The National Hurricane Center said some strengthening is expected in the next 48 hours.
Midcie Francis, spokesperson for National Office of Disaster Services for Antigua and Barbuda, says there has been massive destruction on the island of about 1,700 people.
Hurricane Irma isn't the only storm that's roaring in the Atlantic. A major hurricane is any hurricane category 3 or higher.
Irma is expected to enter the entire Atlantic coast of Florida and Georgia and SC over the weekend and is likely to cause damage.
CNN's Leyla Santiago, in the capital of San Juan, said there were already power outages as strong winds lashed the island and the center of the storm moved just off the northeast coast.
The storm is now in an area that is favorable for development, but the effects from distant Hurricane Irma may slow its growth later this week, according to the National Hurricane Center.
"The season's not over yet, and Texas should be prepared should we have another storm", Metz said. The storm is expected to reach Florida by Sunday, September 10, the AP reported. "Thus the official intensity forecast show steady intensification until day three, then remains flat through day five".
