Downloads of the app spiked during Harvey, and now, as Irma descends on Caribbean islands, Zello has reached the top of the App Store's free-apps chart.
Zello has become a popular app in the wake of Hurricane Irma and has shot to the number one spot on iTunes. Zello was created in 2011 and has reportedly been used by rescue workers called the Cajun Navy following Hurricane Katrina. And since Hurricane Harvey hit last week, new channels have been popping up on the app for groups like Texas Search and Rescue and Houston-area midwives, USA Today reports. "Our voice is how we most naturally communicate".
They followed up by writing that, "There has been some misinformation about Zello requirements".
Zello started its life in 2007 in Russian Federation as Loudtalks and surpassed 100 million users in February.
As much of a handy tool as Zello's app may seem, it is best to be fully prepared in the case that wifi or cellular data is not available.
Florida residents have already been urged to prepare for or evacuate the state as Irma in expected to bring winds of over 180 miles per hour to the region.
If your phone's cellular data is not functioning due to network damage caused by the storm, and you're unable to connect to the internet via WiFi, you won't be able to use Zello to communicate.
