Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn today enacted a citywide curfew starting at 6 p.m. after getting Tampa Electric estimates that as much as 60 percent of the city could lack electricity after Hurricane Irma strikes. Late Sunday morning, it was all officers on duty. For 90 years we have avoided this day, but I think our day has come.
Almost a thousand miles from Tampa the stress over Hurricane Irma is felt at Dallas/Forth Worth International airport.
"Mike Tyson once said - and I don't believe I'm quoting Mike Tyson - everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face".
"We were nervous because we saw all the flights after ours had been canceled so we weren't sure if it was going to be the same for us and we were just very happy to get out of there and be safe with the family all together", Bayro said.
"What happened was the storm continued - after interacting with Cuba - to move west-northwest", Jones said.
Jones warned that some Floridians "may not have power for a number of days, if not weeks".
Tampa International Airport announcing a complete shutdown as of 8:00 pm Saturday - this as Hurricane Irma is expected to bring life threatening winds to South Florida in the next 24 hours. With about 3 million people, the Tampa Bay metropolitan area is the second-most populous in the state.
"If you are out on the streets after six o'clock, we are going to challenge you and find out what you're doing out there", said Tampa interim Police Chief Brian Dugan, calling on people to show patience and compassion.
"The curfew will help us do our jobs to get in and clean up", Buckhorn said.
Hurricane Irma's eye made landfall Sunday morning in the Florida Keys as a Category 4 storm on its way towards Tampa.
Jones said the severity of the storm surge depended on which side of the storm Tampa was on. But he emphasized that Tampa is prepared.
Buckhorn says that some parts of Tampa will probably be less deleteriously affected than others after the storm passes, and those areas of the city could have the curfew lifted first. "This is what we do".
