The North's leader Kim Jong-un said that the launch was a "prelude" to containing the US territory of Guam, near which the country earlier threatened to fire four missiles.

The UN Security Council has already imposed seven sets of sanctions on Pyongyang, the most recent of which were passed this month, but the measures have done little to quell Kim Jong-Un's nuclear missile ambitions.

Spain had condemned Pyongyang's launching of the ICBM that flew over the Japanese island of Hokkaido on Monday and asked the North Korean regime to renounce "its challenge to the worldwide community" and declare a moratorium on its nuclear and ballistic testing.

The 15 members of the Security Council stated with one voice that it was of "vital importance" that North Korea make immediate steps to reduce tensions and called on all states to adhere to United Nations sanctions on Pyongyang, RIA Novosti reported.

North Korea on Thursday condemned the United States for sending its strategic bombers and stealth jets to Korea in response to its latest launch of a missile which flew over Japan, calling the move a "rash" act.

"The Security Council expresses its grave concern that the DPRK is ... deliberately undermining regional peace and stability and have caused grave security concerns around the world", the statement said.

She started her visit in Kyoto, the ancient Japanese capital, where she attended a traditional tea ceremony and had dinner with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Mrs May's presence in Tokyo comes after Pyongyang launched a missile which flew over the Japanese island of Hokkaido.

The launch appeared to be the first of a North Korean missile to cross over Japan, though some rockets it said were used to put satellites into space have done so.

"We want to ensure that they desist this action".

By working together with the worldwide community, we will seek to further strengthen pressure against North Korea.

Pyongyang ignores the global community's pretensions regarding violation of human rights and its nuclear power programs for many years.
