His successor, Dick Advocaat, managed to win the return fixture on Sunday night but Sweden's commanding 4-0 win over Belarus means the Dutch have only a slim chance of catching their rivals in second place.

Proepper settled Dutch nerves by tapping in from close range in the 7th minute.

Netherlands was thrashed 4-0 by France last week.

Propper struck again with his team's third goal in the 80th minute to seal the win and secure the three points for The Netherlands.

More bad defending saw Forsberg square for Marcus Berg to make it 3-0 eight minutes before half-time and it was a foul on Forsberg that led to Sweden being awarded a penalty late on that Andreas Granqvist converted to complete the victory. The win took Croatia back above Ukraine to the top of the table.

In Group B, Gilli Sorensen scored Faroe Islands' victor as they recorded their second victory of the campaign with a 1-0 defeat of Andorra.

After this victory, Holland is in the third position in Group A with 13 points, one point ahead of fourth-placed Bulgaria.
