State Police identified the cyclist who was fatally hit by a auto Friday afternoon in Charlton as town resident John Paire.
The cause of the crash and remaining circumstances remain under investigation, but a preliminary probe indicated that the Paire had come out of a side street just prior to being struck.
Charlton Middle School teacher John Paire was the victim of the 3:30 p.m. crash, according to a letter sent to parents and faculty members yesterday by Dudley-Charlton Regional School District Superintendent Gregg J. Desto.
The driver of the auto that hit Paire remained at the scene of the accident and is cooperating with investigators, police said.
"John was one of the true champions of the "students first" philosophy that permeates our district", Desto wrote. I can tell you with 100% certainty that he loved our students, and that he would do anything to help them succeed. He was the rare leader who cared about people for more than their role within the school.
In addition, counselors will be on hand Monday and Tuesday in school libraries for students and staff.
