"I've got my list of newspapers and magazines; articles are just landing on my phone and I just sit down and read".
Matt Damon and George Clooney have been friends for nearly 20 years. "People didn't understand how talented he was; they just thought he was this really handsome, matinee-idol TV star". Directed by George Clooney, the movie is set in the late '50s and focuses on Damon's character Gardner Lodge as he navigates a small town's dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit and violence.
He continued, "Again, I naively thought that, behind our generation, [another one] was coming with more awareness and inclusiveness, and that everything was getting better with each generation". "Then the night that the President [made his] "many sides" comment was absolutely abhorrent". "And to see these young, aggrieved, white boys walking with their torches and screaming 'Jews will not replace us!' It was just shocking". Read the full interview here.
Matt Damon has never met Donald Trump, but he's not a fan of the president, in part because of the demands he says filmmakers have to meet in order to shoot on his properties. "In all the important ways, he's the same; he's got a huge heart, he's incredibly loyal, and he's really, really smart". "He's changed his career, in a way", he said. He's somebody whose opinion I really value.
"It's terrible", Damon said. "If I'm working on a script, I'm sending it to him for notes; if I'm doing a movie I'm showing him a cut and asking for suggestions".
Still, Damon admitted to THR that his work as an actor, and his residence in California, have "isolated" him from much of the country.
The Jason Bourne actor is now promoting Suburbicon, a crime-drama about a deceptively peaceful community, and is gearing up to start shooting Robert F. Kennedy biopic RFK.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Trump has appeared in a number of television shows, movies and commercials.
"He looks like he could bounce right now, some place in Hollywood", Damon agreed. "He can't wrap things up soon enough, as far as I'm concerned".
