"I kind of thought like that was a sign that the players wanted to deliver to everybody that we stand with our coach, and again, I don't know if I'm reading too much into it, but I kind of took it as maybe there was more than just a bath involved there". One Eagles staffer said the only coach who probably doesn't think Schwartz is trying to undercut Pederson is Pederson.
"What I do here is I work extremely hard to execute the defense the way that he has outlined it for me", Schwartz said.
"When you hear these kinds of unsubstantiated, absolutely insane rumors, and scurrilous in this case, accusing Jim Schwartz of trying to undermine the head coach", Polian said. The article, written by veteran Eagles beat reporter Jeff McLane, cited several anonymous players who felt Schwartz was "waiting to usurp" Pederson. The story also detailed Schwartz's longtime friendship with former National Football League executive Mike Lombardi, a former colleague of Schwartz who assailed Pederson's coaching ability on a podcast that aired before the season opener. "And not everybody is privy to those instructions".
Ultimately, the better Schwartz does at his job, the better the Eagles will do.
Schwartz was a head coach with the Lions from 2009 to "13 and is a self-described brash coach". When asked whether he's cognizant not to step on Pederson's toes, Schwartz said Pederson has told him to keep his personality. But we made enough plays to win and we're going to enjoy that."The Redskins left more things on the field, due to an aggressive Philadelphia defense that shut down the run and got after quarterback Kirk Cousins for most of the game.Cousins, who began the game with outstanding career numbers against the Eagles, started 2-for-8 and never seemed comfortable".
"(It) looked like a pass to me. I can be in your face, check. However, if there is one fantasy defense that I can point to as being disrespected in fantasy albeit slightly, it would be the vicious defensive squad of the Philadelphia Eagles. As long as Coach Pederson is fine with it, I'm going to continue that. We talk quite a bit, actually, during the week, and I love his enthusiasm. Pederson did not feel the need to clear the air after the column was published. "I love his swagger, and I think our defensive guys feed off of that. It wasn't ideal", Pederson said. "And that's one of the things I like about Jim, the fact that he has it and those guys feed off of that". Most (defensive) coordinators I've ever been around have that, and he's no different.
As far as I've been able to tell, the only time there is any friction in the Eagles' locker room is when a 300-pound offensive lineman decides to wear corduroys.
Doug Pederson said the offense was "just OK", which seemed a perfectly reasonable evaluation of a group that was alternately good, bad and something in between for most of the afternoon.
The report, which is grounded in both Schwartz's relationship with vocal Pederson critic and current Ringer contributor Michael Lombardi as well as quotes from anonymous players and assistant coaches, depicted Pederson as a coach unaware that there could be a coup brewing just outside his door.
The Eagles did not do an adequate job addressing the running back position this past offseason, striking out on the top running back prospects in the draft. "Anything else we can't really worry about".
