Attorney General Gordon MacDonald said Frink signed into the visitor center about 1:15 p.m. before going to the hospital room where his mother was receiving care for an aneurism and opening fire.
However, 60-year-old Thomas R. Frink, his uncle, said he had served in the Marines and is employed as a computer programmer.
Anyone with information about Frink's whereabouts the last few days is asked to contact police.
Robert Ferriere told The Associated Press he had no idea why his stepson would want to kill his mother.
He was arraigned at Grafton County Superior Court on Wednesday.

Frink's lawyer didn't immediately return a voicemail message left Wednesday by The Associated Press. Some workers evacuated and others sheltered in place Tuesday.
Conroy says a town hall meeting will be held today from noon to 1 p.m.to discuss the hospital's next steps. "I'm not a mind reader", he said, before hanging up.

Rhode Island State Police said the suspect's vehicle had Rhode Island plates so police in New Hampshire reached out to the state's Fusion Center, an information centre under the command of the state police that also involves representatives from local, state and federal agencies.
Several of Frink's neighbors in Warwick said he mostly kept to himself.
A patient was shot to death inside an intensive care unit Tuesday by her son, leading to a lockdown at New Hampshire's largest hospital, authorities said. Soon after, Lebanon police received an emergency call reporting shots had been fired there. Shortly afterward, gunfire rang out as he fatally shot 70-year-old Pamela Ferriere, of Groton, NH.
Although authorities have released little information about Frink, a 2013 article says his wife and son were found dead in a running auto in an apartment complex.
Travis Frink, 49, of Warwick, Rhode Island, is suspected of shooting his mother Pamela Ferriere, 70, a patient in the intensive care unit of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon on Tuesday, WMUR 9 reported.
Frink had been taken into police custody around 2:57 p.m. and two state police troopers spoke to him at 5:20 p.m.
Frink was detained as he tried to leave the grounds of Dartmouth-Hitchcock, authorities said.
"Facts gathered to this point reveal that the goal of Mr. Frink's visit to the hospital today was to kill his mother", says New Hampshire Attorney General Gordon MacDonald.
