Hicks casts a long shadow within Trump's inner circle, having started as a staffer on the campaign before working her way up to interim White House communications director during a turbulent summer that saw heavy turnover in the West Wing.
As a result, Hicks has hired respected Baltimore attorney and Justice Department veteran Robert Trout, according to multiple sources to whom Politico spoke on condition of anonymity.
Among them is Hicks, as well as former press secretary Sean Spicer and ex-chief of staff Reince Priebus, but there are other close Trump aides that Mueller has his sights on, too.
White House communications director Hope Hicks, one of six White House aides special counsel Robert Mueller is expected to interview as part of his probe into the ongoing Russian Federation investigation, has hired a private attorney. Neither Hicks nor Trout commented on the report.
Separate probes by the US Congress and an independent counsel into Russian interference in the US presidential election are continuing and include questions about potential collusion between members of Donald Trump's campaign and Russia. Trump has refused to condemn Russian President Vladimir Putin's agenda, and the USA president's relationship with Russia has become a toxic issue in Washington.
The Washington Post reported on Friday, citing unnamed sources familiar with Mueller's request, that the special counsel told the White House his team would likely seek to question six of President Donald Trump's current and former advisers, including Hicks.
