Andrew Vrba, 18, (left) is allegedly responsible for gouging out Steinfeld's eyes, stabbing her in the genitals and bragging about the killing. Vrba also told authorities that he, Calderas and Schauer burned Steinfeld's body and disposed of it outside Calderas' home. Authorities said both eyes were gouged out and Steinfeld had been stabbed in the genitals.
The remains were found last week near the mobile home of one of the alleged killers. Steinfeld was apparently killed September 3, six days before her birthday, the paper reports. All four are jailed without bond. Her family had reported her missing September 14, having last heard from her September 1.
The 17-year-old, who was previously engaged to a woman, was dating and living with Calderas and two other suspects: Andrew Vrba and Isis Schauer, both 18, Amber Steinfeld, the victim's mother, said. Briana Calderas, 24, is charged with first-degree murder and abandonment of a corpse. Steinfeld's remains were found near Calderas's trailer in Cabool, Mo., about 20 miles from Houston.
Ashleigh Boswell, Steinfeld's sister, told the News-Leader that the family isn't sure if Steinfeld's gender identity played a role in her death.
Vrba told investigators that he initially wanted to poison Steinfeld, but instead stabbed her in Calderas' living room, a police probable statement states.
A fourth suspect, 25-year-old James Grigsby, was charged with abandonment of a corpse and tampering with evidence Monday.
"People kill each other, which is bad, but to do it that way, that's something you see in movies", Camara said.
The three suspects are accused of burning Steinfeld's body. Her family had reported her missing on September 14, saying they hadn't seen the teen in a couple of weeks, the Associated Press reported in a story that misgenders Steinfeld.
Mic reports Steinfeld's Facebook page was filled with messages from mourners: "Rest in Peace, Ally". Who was fearless enough to live her truth in a very ignorant world. I am praying for your family during this heartbreaking time. "May you be surrounded by support and love".
