He is credited as the creator and the executive producer of the new show with the working title of Avenue 5, which is expected to be filmed next year in London.
Avenue 5 will pull into HBO's proverbial space dock when its London production commences, reportedly sometime in 2018.
Iannucci created HBO's Veep starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and executive produced/ran the show for its first four seasons.
The pilot order comes days after HBO ordered a pilot for a TV adaptation of the beloved graphic novel Watchmen from Leftovers showrunner Damon Lindelof. HBO recently confirmed that the upcoming seventh season of the half-hour would be its last. He stepped down in 2015, citing the toll producing a series in the US has taken on him and his London-based family, but he remained in business with HBO.
Iannucci, a Scotland-born writer/director, has been honing his craft as a political satirist, mostly on television, achieving notable acclaim with the 2005-2012 United Kingdom civil servant comedy series The Thick of It, which famously showcased the obscenity-imbued rants of would-be 12Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi.
The British writer, who also created U.S. series Veep and movie In The Loop, is to make a series set in the future and mostly in space.
