Costa is known to be keen on a return to Atletico - the club he left to join Chelsea in 2014 for £32 million - and multiple reports on Thursday suggest that the deal is worth £57.2m fee for the player.
Costa had been in Brazil since July and has refused to return to Chelsea training, accusing the club of treating him "like a criminal".
"Morata played a good game".
The Spain worldwide had been a key figure under Jose Mourinho and Guus Hiddink but found himself on the bench after Conte preferred a midfield pairing of N'Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic.
"Miguel (Angel Gil Marin, Atletico's CEO) made a great effort and I am very grateful for that, both to him and the club".
"There is always a reaction on the back of a disappointing result, and we fully expect the performance to be markedly better this weekend".
Costa said he still felt "special affection" for Chelsea, where he won two Premier League titles.
"I think now Eden is improving a lot and for sure he's in contention for Atletico Madrid", Conte told reporters. He played with great intensity. He is a good player, he is a complete player, technically strong, a good leader ... he has a lot of room for improvement.
On Saturday Conte's words were more prosaic but equally heartfelt.
Despite playing a key role in Chelsea's success last term, Costa was deemed surplus to Antonio Conte's requirements and has spent the first part of the new campaign in exile. We are rotating and the answer from my players is positive.
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte says that their 4-0 win at Stoke wasn't easy despite the scoreline and added that his side must rest ahead of another busy week.
"I'm very happy, I think that it took too long, but there was a happy ending", he said.
Eden Hazard is set to return to the Chelsea starting XI in the Premier League this weekend, and after last week's dour 0-0 draw with Arsenal, this comes at a ideal time for Blues fans.
