The National Weather Service says San Francisco's temperature has reached 106 degrees Fahrenheit (41 degrees Celsius), breaking an all-time record high. Highs in those areas are expected to range from 100 to 112, NWS forecasters said, and overnight lows will not drop below the mid 70s.
"I work from home and I live in an old mobile home with no air conditioning and not very good insulation".
Several schools canceled classes due to the citywide outages. Officials say smoke from at least a dozen wildfires burning in Northern California is drifting into Bay Area skies and contributing to the unhealthy air. "If it gets too hot over the weekend, I'll leave the house and go to a movie".
Managers of California's power grid asked for voluntary electricity conservation.
Forecasters say high pressure causing the heat wave is almost stationary, so torrid conditions will continue into next week.
The NWS warns of heat-related illnesses, including those that are life-threatening, during the excessive heat period and advises residents to enter warm areas like their vehicles with caution.
Power outages were reported in San Bernardino County Thursday morning following another busy night for utility crews, who worked to restore power to more than 11,000 customers in the Los Angeles area.
The outlook was the same in Southern California as the region faced a combination of strong high pressure and weak onshore breezes from the Pacific Ocean to land.
Areas throughout Los Angeles, including the Westwood area and Santa Monica, experienced isolated thunderstorms and showers Thursday evening, according to the NWS's website.
High heat baking California has been compounded by monsoonal moisture, triggering thunderstorms and lightning.
Forecasters said more heat could be expected when remnants of Tropical Storm Lidia move north from Mexico's Baja California during the weekend.
A heat emergency has also been called for the San Gabriel Valley through Friday and in downtown L.A. through Saturday.
A heat advisory will remain in effect until 10 a.m. along the coast, in beach cities, in metropolitan Los Angeles and the Hollywood Hills, then be immediately replaced by a more serious excessive heat warning - the first time this week that such a warning has been issued for the coastal zone.
Fire weather warnings were in effect for parts of Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota.
