Tribal figures linked to a USA -backed alliance announced plans Monday for a council to run Syria's Deir al-Zor, as the alliance and regime troops battle militants in and around the city.
The operation to fully liberate Deir ez-Zor is still underway with the Syrian army fighting Daesh terrorists in the southern part of the city, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
- Aiming to push Daesh from the city's eastern neighbourhoods.
Much of Deir Az Zor City has been under ISIL control since 2014 with only 40% under government control with about 100,000 civilians.
Government troops have broken both extremist sieges and were preparing yesterday to launch an offensive on the eastern districts still held by IS.
The Syrian troops are completing the defeat of the Islamic State terror group (IS, outlawed in Russia), which blocked Deir ez-Zor's northern and southern neighborhoods, the Russian military group's Chief of Staff, Lieutenant-General Alexander Lapin, told reporters on Tuesday.
The airstrikes hit displacement camps on the western bank of Euphrates river as well as boats sailing toward the eastern bank of the river, said the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The coalition, the SDF, Syria's government and Russian Federation have agreed on a "de-confliction line" in northeastern Syria to prevent the two offensives from clashing.
