Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said four Australians were injured in the attack targeting tourists in the Spanish city's Las Ramblas district.
"Our thoughts are with the victims of these bad attacks and the people of Spain", a spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London told AAP.
Another Sydney woman, Suria Intan, on the last few days of a European holiday with friends is also in a serious condition in hospital.
There are thought to be victims from at least 24 countries including Britain, Ireland, Argentina, Australia, China, Belgium, Cuba, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, the Netherlands, Peru, Romania, Spain, the United States of America and Venezuela.
Family and friends of Julian are sharing photographs of the little boy widely across social media in the hope he will be found alive.
The ABC daily said Julian Cadman was separated from his mother during the attack.
"But we must work together if we are to confront this evil of terrorism and also to confront and deal with the perverted extremist ideology which drives it, ridding the internet of poisonous material and ensuring that our police and security services have the powers that they need".
"My cousin, Julian Alessandro Cadman is missing. He's obviously somewhere, we just need to know where". "Please like and share", she said.
"Julian is 7 years old and was out with Jom when they were separated, due to the recent terrorist activity".
Spanish newspaper El Pais had reported that Julian Cadman had been found in hospital, but Los Mossos d'Esquadra - the province's police force - said no child had been located, nor were they missing.
She said she kneeled down to shield their son, 6, and daughter, 7 months, from the sight. "Please share if you have family or friends in Barcelona".
The UK Foreign Office has said that a "small number" of British nationals were injured in the attacks in Spain.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of chaos, panic and terror.
Bishop said consular officials would be at the hospital to assist the woman "as soon as possible".
'My first reaction was the Bourke Street massacre, because that is what it reminded me of - the vision of people fleeing in just such terror, ' she said.
