Bradley Walsh, the former Coronation Street star and quiz-show host, will reportedly be Doctor Who's new companion.

Cash Trapped is now airing weekdays at 5pm on ITV, filling in while The Chase takes a well-earned summer break.

One person who does very much seem to approve of the idea of Walsh as a new companion is Matt Lucas, who played Nardole on this past season of the show.

Actual Bradley Walsh. Bradley Walsh, beloved of your nan, Corrie, beloved of Stormzy, beloved of the millions of music listeners who helped his album outsell Zayn Malik's previous year and quizmaster extraordinaire.

The next season of Doctor Who will see a male sidekick alongside the first ever female actress cast in the role of the Time Lord.

"It means that his schedule over the coming months will be jam-packed". Although Walsh may not be too familiar to global audiences, the actor and presenter is a household name in Britain thanks to roles in Coronation Street and his presenting gig on popular game show, The Chase.

The past companions in the show - Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman), Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) and Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) - were all in their 20s when they joined the Doctor in his adventures. He loves that show with a passion and so do the audience so he's delighted to have found a way to make it all work together'.

According to the report, the decision is still "top secret" on the BBC's end, though the confirmation apparently came from people close to Walsh, who say he is "thrilled" to have landed the starring role in the long-running sci-fi series. Share in the comments!

"I realised that if I didn't do it, then there wasn't going to be a Christmas episode at all".
