Kisner even had a 10-under-par score after the putting two consecutive birdies in the 14th and 15th holes.
While McIlroy came into the day out of contention for the title-he was 11 strokes behind Kevin Kisner after Saturday's play-he notched his first below-par round at Quail Hollow Club this week, a solid finish to an otherwise trying tournament for the star.
Either way Day's mojo is back and as he heads into the final 36 holes he appears to be at least one of the men to beat.
Kisner, with strong family ties in the Charlotte area, although resident across the state line in Aiken, South Carolina, watched Day's horror show down the last and nearly had one of his own as his approach shot only avoided finishing in the creek by hitting the footbridge across the hazard. "The bad shots are working out and the good shots are working out and I'm making a lot of putts".
After taking a drop near some portable toilets, he hit a flop shot over some trees into the fairway rough. It's hard on your mental game, I think as much as anything.
"And then I hit a few nice shots middle of the round".
One of those remaining holes is a reachable par five and so, along with a rest, he has a chance to turn the negative momentum around.
Lowry regrouped brilliantly after his triple bogey, fading a 300-yard drive off the creek left of the 18th before rasping a 198-yard six-iron to 10 feet. I'm sure I will be, too.
Four-time major victor Rory McIlroy had to birdie his 16th and 17th to post a second successive 72 having flirted briefly with the cut line after four back nine bogeys in five holes. A double bogey by Kisner on that hole helped Day cut his deficit in half, pulling within three strokes of the lead. "You're up at night thinking about, 'OK, what do I need to do to get back to that winning form?' I think once I minimize the distractions that I've had in my life and can focus more on just playing golf and focus, and single-focus on golf, then everything will take care of itself".
Matsuyama played the back nine in five under which included birdies at 12, 13, 14, 15 and 17. "Everything's really simple. So I'm going to use that to my advantage tomorrow".
