The sixth seed claimed a 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 victory at the Aviva Centre in the Canadian city to record her first win over a world number one.
Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark has upset recently crowned Czech world number one Karolína Plíšková to reach the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup in Toronto. She beat Petra Kvitova, Angelique Kerber and Lucie Safarova to reach the semi-finals. But the 27-year-old Dane found her footing and served out the match after a brief rain delay at 5-3 to clinch victory in 80 minutes.
In earlier quarter-final matches on Saturday, Simona Halep continued her quest to defend her Toronto title with a straight sets win, while Elina Svitolina needed three sets to book the last semi-final spot.
The pair will play twice in a day after rain disrupted the schedule.
Svitolina resumed her quarter-final with Garbine Muguruza trailing by a set, but turned things around superbly to beat the Wimbledon champion 4-6 6-4 6-3. They now face the daunting task of having to play their semi-final later in the day.
After beating Spain's Rafael Nadal yesterday, the 18-year-old wild card entry overcame Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. But I think I'm ready, I feel strong enough in my legs.
